The “Bloc Petro Poroshenko” faction is deliberately blocking the call of the election of Lutsk Mayor in the Verkhovna Rada. This was stated by the head of UKROP, MP Taras Batenko.
“The BPP faction believes that Lutsk should belong to them and that they have the right to claim for the headship in this city. Such issues should be decided during the election. Please, run in the election, nominate your candidate – and let the strongest win the competition,” said the MP.
The UKROP member notes that the city has remained without a mayor since February 2017, when the mayor Mykola Romanyuk passed away. Since then, the Lutsk community has repeatedly appealed to the parliament to call an extraordinary mayoral election. The relevant resolution was on the agenda of the Verkhovna Rada several times, but it was delayed because of the alleged lack of unity of all factions.
“In fact, there is only one conflicted party, which is the BPP faction, which does not allow the question to be voted on and fails voting. The community cannot be hostage of the interests, sympathies or antipathies of certain political players,” said Taras Batenko.
According to the parliamentarian, Lutsk is currently run by the acting city mayor. However, the word “acting” does not allow the official to take full responsibility for the state of affairs in the city. The unwillingness of the authorities to call the election holds many thousands people in the community on the hook.
“In Lutsk there should be a legitimate city mayor who will assume responsibility for the state of affairs in the city after legitimate elections,” said the MP.
During the current plenary week, the Verkhovna Rada will call about fifty local elections. The MPs from UKROP demand to include in the list of planned issues a resolution on calling the elections in Lutsk.
