The blocking of the work of Ukraine-NATO Commission by Hungary shows the inability of the Ukrainian authorities to implement an effective foreign policy. The chairman of the board of “Maidan of Foreign Affairs” Fund, head of Kyiv city organization of UKROP Bohdan Yaremenko has written about it on his Facebook page.
“Hungarian demarches in the form of preventing holding of a meeting of Ukraine-NATO Commission can be perceived as a problem only from the point of view of the typical Ukrainian approach – fetishizing high-level measures and restraining foreign policy to summits, political tourism and statements", - said the UKROP member.
According to him, the Hungarians are deliberately putting pressure on this painful issue, because they understand that cooperation with NATO is crucial for Ukraine. However, the North Atlantic Alliance has not suspended any program of cooperation with Kyiv because of the position of Budapest.
“The answer is obvious – everything goes as usually. In cooperation with NATO, the reform of the security and defense sector there is one problem – Ukrainian incompetence, bureaucracy, and corruption. And not at all Hungary,” stressed Bohdan Yaremenko.
He has noted that Ukrainian diplomacy did not find a worthy answer to Hungary’s pressure. Instead, the authorities made a big mistake believing that problems with Budapest are limited to the law on education.
According to the representative of UKROP, the solution of the current situation is difficult, but it is quite obvious – first of all, Ukraine should take control of the situation with Hungarian influence in Zakarpattya. At the same time, it is important not to make the next mistake and not to make Ukrainian Hungarians hostage of the confrontation between the two governments.
Also, Kyiv should take a pause in dialogue with Budapest. Such a move will show the Hungarians that their diplomatic tricks do not impress Ukraine. And finally, domestic diplomats should find a topic for equivalent deals with a neighboring state.
