The “revolutionary” promise by President Poroshenko to repeal some of the provisions of the Treaty on Friendship with Russia during the fifth year of the war will play into the hands of Moscow. The chairman of the board of “Maidan of Foreign Affairs” Fund, Head of Kyiv city organization of UKROP Bohdan Yaremenko has written about it on his Facebook page.
According to him, the treaty on friendship between Ukraine and Russia does not foresee the right of the parties to refuse some of its articles of their own free will. Moreover, the rules and principles of international law allow only the complete cancellation of such agreements unilaterally.
“The statement/decision of Ukraine on unilateral withdrawal from certain separate articles of the Treaty on Friendship with the Russian Federation will allow Russia to take advantage of the provisions of international law on the integrity of treaties, declare that Ukraine’s withdrawal from some articles is a failure to implement the Treaty and cancel it unilaterally,” said Bohdan Yaremenko .
In his opinion, our country should completely terminate the bilateral document with its northern neighbor. The aggressive policy on the part of Moscow towards Ukraine gives us all legal grounds.
“So what’s the point? Why not get out of it on the grounds that Russia has violated the article on respect for territorial integrity and the principle of inviolability of borders? And what is the value of the relevant articles for Ukraine, if Russia do not care a damn for them?” stressed the UKROP member.
