The Verkhovna Rada has made a step towards restoring historical justice by adopting the bill No. 6574 “On Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts of Ukraine on Improving the Procedure for Rehabilitation of Victims of Repressions of the Communist Totalitarian Regime in 1917-1991”. This was stated by the MP from UKROP Iryna Konstankevych.
“It is very important to remember those people who have made our life in an independent Ukraine possible. Without this, our society could not feel complete,” noted the MP.
The bill offers a clearer definition of persons who are included in the category of illegally condemned and repressed Ukrainians during the Soviet era. In addition, the document provides for mechanisms that will facilitate the search for illegally condemned persons in Ukrainian archives.
“This is about millions of destroyed human destinies and hundreds of thousands of separated families. When today we are talking about lacking national elite, we should understand that all Ukrainian intelligentsia was destroyed in the thirties of the last century,” stressed Iryna Konstankevych.
In the opinion of the parliamentarian, the state should pay more attention to restoring historical justice and honoring the memory of the fighters for Ukraine’s independence. Young people should learn about the events of those years not only from their relatives, but also from school teachers, textbooks and literature.
As an example, Iryna Konstankevych cited a rebellious novel by one of today’s most famous writers Vasyl Shklyar – “Troscha”. The MP believes that such books should be an integral part of the school course.
