The promises of the authorities to restore the rights of the Crimean Tatars in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea remain at the level of political declarations.
This was stated on the air of the ATR TV channel by Erfan Kudusov, head of the Crimean Republican organization of the “Ukrainian Association of Patriots – UKROP”.
The representative of UKROP expressed doubts about adoption of a law that will recognize the Crimean Tatars as the indigenous people of the peninsula. As well as it is unlikely that the amendments to the Constitution, consolidating the status of the Crimean Tatar autonomy, will be adopted.
According to Erfan Kudusov, the current authorities just have no political will to take such steps.
“This is, in particular, the “merit” of the president. When the president wants, he pushes any law he needs in parliament, even forcing the Verkhovna Rada to appoint a person with no legal education as the Prosecutor General. However, there is no progress in laws on the Crimea in parliament,” noted the UKROP member.
According to him, the actions of the Ukrainian authorities regarding the occupiers should be much more active and heavy-handed, both within the country and internationally. Diplomats should seek to strengthen sanctions against Russia, and lawyers – prepare well-founded lawsuits in the international courts. Instead, Ukraine continues to maintain diplomatic and political relations with the aggressor, and the Verkhovna Rada cannot even terminate the agreement on friendship, cooperation and partnership with the Russian Federation.
“Unfortunately, we still do not see the things that the state should do,” added Erfan Kudusov.
The representative of UKROP noted that the Crimean Tatars have been waiting for more than a year for the fulfillment of the promise of the President Petro Poroshenko and Defense Minister Stepan Poltorak on the official status of the Crimean Tatar battalion.
