At the session of Lviv City Council the deputies have unanimously supported the appeal of the head of the UKROP faction Ihor Telishevskiy to the President and the Head of the Verkhovna Rada on adoption of a new Electoral Code.

“The main novation of the document – regional open election lists – meets the requirements of voters and democratic international practices. Such a system will give people the opportunity to independently determine who will represent their interests in the legislative body, and will increase the deputies’ responsibility to voters,” said the UKROP member.

According to him, the document also stipulates that the candidates for national elections can be nominated only by the political forces, which have regional organizations in at least 14 administrative-territorial units. Together with the 4 per cent electoral threshold, this rule will help to clear Ukraine’s political field from one-day parties and PR projects.

“UKROP is convinced that such a step will contribute to the development of real powerful political forces and will open the way for changing the entire corrupt system in Ukraine, which still cannot be broken by any Maidan,” stressed Ihor Telishevskiy.

As is known, the new code provides holding of elections by proportional system with open lists. As before only specific political parties have been elected to the Verkhovna Rada; and their leader has decided which of the candidates will get a seat in Parliament from a certain political force. Under the new code, voters will vote not only for the party, but for specific candidates from the list.
