The situation with the former head of Odesa Regional State Administration Mikheil Saakashvili may end with the loss of power for the current authorities. This was stated on September 12 by the chairman of the UKROP political council, MP Taras Batenko on the air of ZIK TV channel.
“The authorities have got themselves into this and they already do not know what to do. I think that for its representatives the night begins, and it may end with the loss of power,” said Taras Batenko.
The MP has noted that it is necessary first to understand the grounds on which Saakashvili received Ukrainian citizenship at the time. As now everything indicates that the real motive for such a decision was the desire of the authorities to remove then the Head of Odesa Regional State Administration Ihor Palitsya from this office.
According to the UKROP representative, the case of the ex-president of Georgia has demonstrated that Ukraine is now somewhere between authoritarianism and anarchy. The authorities are too weakened to become fully authoritarian, but the society has not yet been strengthened enough to seek the creation of democratic institutions in a legal way.
Because of the president’s reluctance to share his powers in accordance with the Constitution, the tension in society will only increase. In this regard, UKROP supports abolishment of the office of president or limitation of his functions after the next election in order to prevent further usurpation of power, noted the MP.
Taras Batenko has also mentioned that under the conditions of growing dissatisfaction with the actions of the authorities, Saakashvili could try to unite opposition around him in order to hold an early election and eventually take the post of prime minister, having distributed seats in the future government.
The politician has added that 2017 may be fully compared to 1917: “These historical parallels are very sad. We strive for radical transformations, conduct the revolution, and then lose the parts of our state. The Revolution of Dignity is not over yet.”
