On August 17, a well-known Ukrainian writer, member of the UKROP party Vasyl Shklyar presented a new children’s book at Vasyl Symonenko Library in Kyiv. The collected edition of five stories called “Revenge of Baba Yaga” is intended for children of the junior school age and is a kind of continuation of the book “Doggie Gav, nightingale, bumblebee and two acorns”.
“One of my tasks was to show child’s entry into the adult world, the first encounter with the evil that is present in our lives. I tried to show it trough children’s perception and experience,” said the writer.
According to him, all the stories were written in the old Ukrainian tradition, because modern literature is so overloaded with tales, fantasy and man-made plots. Vasyl Shklyar has noted that the book was partly created on the basis of the memories from his childhood, which had burnt in the memory. That is why most texts are written by impromptu, when one story could be born in one night, in contrast to the serious novels that can be written during 15 years or more.
The edition was published by Apriori Publishing House. And illustrations for it were created by a famous illustrator Kost’ Lavro. Like “Doggie Gav...” the new book contains parallel Ukrainian and English texts.
During the presentation, Vasyl Shklyar and Kost’ Lavro remembered the stories from their childhood, and the artist carried out a master-class on drawing for those who wanted to participate.
