Due to inaction of the law enforcement agencies, Ukrainian business has got into a situation as it was in the early 1990’s. This was stated on the air of “NewsOne” TV channel by the chairman of Khmelnytsky regional organization of the “Ukrainian Association of Patriots – UKROP”, lawyer Dmytry Yovdiy.
“Unfortunately, the situation is only getting worse. Many businessmen confirm the fact that we are really sinking to the level of the beginning and the mid 90’s,” said Dmytro Yovdiy. According to the lawyer, the only difference is that in the early 1990s, entrepreneurs were blackmailed by illegal armed gangs, which now exist in form of law enforcement agencies or fictitious civic organizations. Law enforcers do not react to the actions of a number of the so-called public organizations with weapons, which are engaged in illegal seizure of enterprises on the authorities’ order. Such organizations are openly putting pressure on business, demanding monetary reward in exchange for protection racket from the regulatory bodies.
Instead of this, the law enforcement agencies focus exclusively on imitating the fight against corruption. They periodically are demonstrating detentions of high officials to the Ukrainians, and thereafter the cases simply collapse, even without going to trial. According to Dmytro Yovdiy, the current authorities have no political will to fight crime effectively, so the situation will only deteriorate.
