Ukraine should seek the opportunities to obtain security guarantees, without concentrating only on the issue of joining NATO. This was stated by the chairman of the board of “Maidan of Foreign Affairs” Fund, member of the political council of the “Ukrainian Association of Patriots – UKROP” Bohdan Yaremenko in the program “Verdict” on the air of Espresso.TV channel.

“We should bring up the issue not about membership in any organization, but about obtaining effective security guarantees. President is cunning when he says that strengthening our country’s security is possible only in cooperation with NATO members,” said Bohdan Yaremenko.

According to him, once Ukraine has lost its chance to get the status of the main non-NATO partner from the US Congress that would provide a level of military cooperation that equates to security guarantees. Besides, membership of the European Union will allow to strengthen security: though it’s not a defense union, it’s hard to imagine someone attacking a country that is a part of the EU, stressed the representative of UKROP. However, due to shortcomings of the Ukrainian authorities in the international arena, we are not talking about a European prospects for Ukraine.

Bohdan Yaremenko has also stressed that nuclear guarantees, which may be provided first of all by the USA, should be important for our country. At the same time, thanks to the development of the Armed Forces, in the nearest future Ukraine will be able not only to become self-sufficient, but also to guarantee security of the other countries, in particular, Moldova, Georgia and the Baltic States.

At the same time, commenting on the issue of referendum on Ukraine’s membership in NATO, the politician has stressed that now this is not the time for it. Despite the fact that its results are likely to be positive, they will not prompt the representatives of the alliance to take steps towards Ukraine. On the other hand, a referendum can only aggravate relations with the North Atlantic Treaty partners.
