Dmytro Simansky: The forces of Ukrainian special services are aimed at persecuting political opponents rather than at countering terrorism and cyber attacks

A massive cyber attack on computer systems of government bodies has demonstrated that Ukrainian intelligence agencies are unable to withstand cyber threats. This was stated on June 29 by the chairman of the Advisory Expert Group of the “Ukrainian Association of Patriots – UKROP” Dmytro Simansky in the program “Right to Rule” on the air of “1+1” TV channel.

“I think that it is necessary to draw conclusions not only from what has already happened, but also from what did not happen and what could happen. This should be taken very seriously,” said Dmytro Simansky.

According to the expert, Russia has almost exhausted all resources for conducting a hybrid war against Ukraine, and therefore it began to resort to new methods, including the growing wave of terrorism and massive cyber attacks. The Security Service of Ukraine would have to counteract the external enemy, but the forces of the special services are now aimed at persecuting political opponents of the current regime, and not at protecting citizens. One of the examples is a recent search at home of the deputy of Zaporizhia Regional Council from UKROP Dmytro Zotov because of organization of a rally with participation of the veterans of the war against Russia, who defended their legal right to land plots.

Dmytro Simansky has noted that cyber security is not included in the list of priorities of other state structures. For example, this year the National Bank has planned to spend on the services of IT companies, protecting its computer networks, less money than on taxi services. Instead, the ordinary IT administrators turned out to be the most active in the fight against a computer virus.

“Ordinary system administrators took part in solution of the problem with this virus, the experts who have created several groups. IT community has been united and self-organized, as at the time people did on Maidan and in spring 2014,” said the representative of UKROP.
