The basic law, according to which Ukraine is living now, needs to be changed because it does not meet demands and intentions of the society that have undergone fundamental changes since the Revolution of Dignity. This was stated by the MP, Head of the political council of the “Ukrainian Association of Patriots – UKROP” Taras Batenko on his Facebook page.
“We have been living for over 20 years under the current Basic Law. During this time, we and Ukraine have changed radically. But the Constitution has remained unchanged. Only occasionally some cosmetic adjustments are made in order to cover political agreements of the authorities and their desire to continue spoiling the country and our people,” said the politician.
According to the MP, it is necessary to start a deep and comprehensive constitutional process with the participation of the widest range of experts, patriotic politicians and civic activists. And it should result in a new Basic Law that would be created by the Ukrainian people and in its own interests.
“So only we may get the document that will guarantee freedom, dignity and human rights,” considers Taras Batenko.
The politician has also stressed that UKROP stands for Ukraine’s transformation into a parliamentary republic with strong local self-government and limited powers of the President. As long as the Basic Law is not changed, the patriotic part of society has to do everything to protect citizens’ constitutional rights and freedoms and to control how the authorities adhere to the obligations, assigned by the Basic Law.
