The representatives of the “Ukrainian Association of Patriots – UKROP” in Parliament and at all levels of local self-government in Volyn region demand that the elections of the Mayor of Lutsk be called within the term determined by law.
The MP Iryna Konstankevych, who was elected in the 23rd constituency from UKROP, stated it on June 22 during a joint press briefing with the MP Ihor Huz (People’s Front) in the Verkhovna Rada.
The MP has noted that absence of the legitimate mayor in Lutsk for almost half a year is not only the problem of the city with more than two hundred thousand residents, but also of those deputies, who represent Volyn region in the Verkhovna Rada. Taking into consideration that the UKROP party also has a majority in the City Council of Lutsk and in Volyn Regional Council, the political force will insist on holding the elections in compliance with all the requirements of law at the national and local levels.
“We are responsible for the destiny of the city and we should not only monitor the process of calling the elections, but also ensure that they are held in time,” said Iryna Konstankevych.
According to her, if the Verkhovna Rada does not schedule elections for September 24, the will expression of citizens may be delayed until the next year, and this is unacceptable.
It is to be recalled, the former mayor of Lutsk, Mykola Romanyuk, died this year on February 3. On June 8, the Verkhovna Rada registered a resolution on calling the extraordinary mayoral elections on September 24, 2017. In order to hold the elections in September, the Parliament should vote for this resolution until the end of the current session.
