NATO membership is an absolute priority for Ukraine, but the authorities use this issue for their own PR. This was stated by the MP, head of the UKROP political council Taras Batenko, commenting on the decision of Parliament to adopt the bill № 6470 on Ukraine’s foreign policy course.

“At the time as a lawmaker I submitted a bill that abolished the non-aligned status and clearly specified integration into NATO. The bill was adopted as a presidential one in 2014. Today the topic of NATO is raised again. This shows that the authorities are so admired with PR that they even don’t know what issue may be made out of thin air so that the President, Parliament Speaker and other officials could promote themselves,” said Taras Batenko commenting on to the journalists on June 8.

According to the MP, against the background of falling confidence of Ukrainians the President seeks to improve his rating and that is why he is actively speaking about a visa-free regime, NATO and even has promised a referendum on joining the organization. However, neither the positive result of the referendum nor the today’s decision of Parliament mean an automatic NATO membership for Ukraine.

At the same time the bill on priority of NATO integration will allow our country to come close to the organization, because the authorities will be obliged to allocate the necessary funds to achieve the stated goal, has stressed the Chairman of the Board of Maidan of Foreign Affairs Fund, member of UKROP Bohdan Yaremenko.

The politician has also added that NATO remains the only effective political and military alliance in the world, which is based on common values, and in addition, may provide Ukraine with real nuclear guarantees.

“Our country doesn’t need any other security guarantees. Stop stealing, start thinking and spotlight a human life – and Ukraine will soon be able not only to protect itself, but also to provide security guarantees to the others (excluding nuclear),” wrote Bohdan Yaremenko on his Facebook page.
