The deputies of Baranivka district council from UKROP at the regular session on May, 25 will support the appeal to the Prosecutor General of Ukraine and the Ministry Ecology and Natural resources concerning pollution of rivers Homora and Sluch. The deputy of Zhytomyr Regional Council, the head of the UKROP party faction Nataliya Kokitko has informed about it.
In the document the representatives of community appeal to the authorities asking to urgently intervene in the situation in Baranivka district. Now it is close to a social explosion, because the residents are going to block roads or railway if pollution of local rivers Homora and Sluch is not stopped.
It is not the first time that the rivers are contaminated by emissions that destroy everything. Probably the responsibility for this lays on the LLC “Poninkivska Cardboard and Paper Factory – Ukraine”, which is located in the village Poninka in Khmelnytsky region. Last year the residents of Zhytomyr region found out that the company pollutes waters and had already collected signatures and addressed to the Ministry of Ecology and Natural resources. As a result, the company was fined. But there were no other serious consequences.
On May, 10 this year, residents of the village Pershotravesk, Glybochok and Baranivka blocked highway because the guck was dropped again into the Homora river. People accused Poninkivska company and demanded that the government influenced the pollutant.
Now the UKROP representatives in Zhytomyr region are trying to find a legitimate way to put an end to rivers’ destruction, and to ensure that those responsible for it get an appropriate punishment.
“It’s time to put an end to the environmental disaster. The UKROP members believe that the problem should be solved in a lawful, civilized way. If the government is powerless in this case, it means that it does not fulfill its functions. On May, 22 at the conciliatory council of Zhytomyr Regional Council I tried to convince my colleagues – deputies from the other factions – to express solidarity with the residents of the district, who are suffering from this disaster, and I they have understood me. If the UKROP representatives see that this method (voting for an appeal – Red.) is ineffective and there is no result, our party members will act in another way. We cannot waste time. We want to make the authorities hear about human distress and urge to remember that fire is a good servant but a bad master,” summed up Nataliya Kokitko.
