On Tuesday, May 23, at 9:00 near the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine there will start an action “Mykola Zaporozhets” – in support of a civilized market of used cars. Organizers of the event are the “Ukrainian Patriots Association – UKROP” and NGO “West Ukrainian Association of transit cars owners” (NGO ZAVTRA).
The purpose of the picket is to show that a civilized car market in Ukraine is possible and affordable cars for Ukrainians may become a reality, and not only a dream. The participants also want to draw attention of people’s deputies to the bills № 5561 and № 5562, which were developed by the NGO ZAVTRA together with the community “Free people have cars” and MPs from UKROP. These documents will allow Ukrainians to buy cheap and safe foreign cars. They provide replacement of environmental standards “Euro” for the used cars by technical inspection and removal of restrictions on the use of existing preferential rates. The adoption of these bills is hampered by car manufacturers’ lobby. The main argument is that abolition of the requirements of compliance with environmental standards does not comply with EU practice.
In order to prove the absurdity of this statement, the activists bought Zaporozhets, produced in 1991, imported into the EU (Poland), got customs clearance and registered it, having paid quite a reasonable sum of money – 40% of the car’s value.
On May, 20 the representatives of NGO ZAVTRA started a national wide rally, driving Zaporozhets. They took the road in Lviv and are going to Lutsk through Rivne, Zhytomyr and Kyiv.
