Sanctions against Yanukovych and his entourage would be an unpleasant surprise for the associates of the former President, who still retain their influence in Ukraine and have ties with the current government. So they made every effort to block a draft resolution, which was considered by the Parliament on May 18. This was stated by the MP from UKROP Oleksandr Dubinin.
“Unfortunately, those in power have used the rule of telephone, giving instructions to their subordinates in Parliament, in order to defeat this resolution. As a result, several dozen representatives of the pro-presidential faction BPP have left the session hall so that they could not vote for sanctions. It’s quite a strange position of the MPs from the ruling party,” the politician said to journalists in Parliament.
The MP has also noted that the state has all the levers to bring Yanukovych and his entourage to justice for the offenses that can be proved – treason, lobbying private companies’ interests, money laundering, large-scale embezzlement and tax evasion – but it does not do anything.
It is to be recalled, on May 18 Parliament failed to adopt a draft resolution number 5350, which provided introduction of sanctions against Yanukovych and his entourage. In particular, 35 MPs from the BPP faction did not vote for it.
