The conditions in our educational system do not allow children from rural areas to compete on a par with pupils of city schools.

This was stated on May 16, during the speech at the closing ceremony of the 17th Petro Yatsyk International Competition of Ukrainian language experts, by the MP from UKROP, and former chair of Ukrainian literature department of Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University Iryna Konstankevych.

“Rural school is still, unfortunately, unable to compete on a par with the city. This means that children from the village and from the city continue to be in unequal conditions,” said Iryna Konstankevych. The MP has noted that among the winners of the competition of the Ukrainian language experts mostly there are pupils from the cities and city schools. According to the UKROP representatives, today nearly two-thirds of schools are located in rural areas, and about 1.3 million pupils are studying there. More than a half of 27 thousand of Ukrainian villages does not have their own schools, and every sixth village school is ungraded.

“This gap is a shame to our educational system and society!” said Iryna Konstankevych. The MP has stressed the importance of school competitions, as through them the state may find talents and encourage the best and, most importantly, unite Ukraine through communication of contestants from all the regions.

“I would like to honor children from Crimea at this stage in the future. Also I hope that those who live outside Ukraine will join us,” added the MP.

According to the politician, today in our country there is a need for effective social elevators that may raise the best to the top, and not those who are not worthy, as it is now. Iryna Konstankevych congratulated all the winners of Petro Yatsyk Competition, among whom were two pupils from Volyn region. Another representative of Volyn region – teacher of the Ukrainian language and literature Tetyana Paradovska – has won Olena Levchanivska prize, founded by Iryna Konstankevych.
