“My grandma then left alone with four children, my mother was just a few months. Of course, it was extremely difficult to live for a widow with orphans. Our family is not alone in this grief, there were hundreds of thousands of such families. A heavy burden had to be borne by women, as victory over the Nazis was only the beginning of a long and difficult way – said Iryna Konstankevych. – Dad’s father and his brothers were in the ranks of the UPA. Their fate was also tragically – two uncles were killed, others were subjected to repression. War is a plague that devours life, and as a result leaves a wasteland.”
The terrible consequences of war and the way to victory – the grandfather told about it to the deputy of the Regional Council from UKROP faction Oleksandr Omelchuk, when he was a child.
“My grandfathers were fighting at war. One of them lived in Russia, the other one – in Rozhyshche district. I was a child when my grandfathers died, but I remember their stories about the war. Also I keep an order of one of the grandfathers, for me it is a great value,” said Oleksandr Omelchuk.
Victory Day over Nazism also means a lot for the head of the volunteer center “Patriot’s Heart”, deputy from UKROP faction in Lutsk City Council Serhiy Balytsky.
“Truly I began to realize this high-day, when I served in army. One of my grandfathers was also fighting and was wounded, had many rewards. He was a soldier, but I am very proud of my grandfather and often remember him, says Serhiy Balytsky. – Now Ukraine is again burning in the flames of war. We remember and commemorate heroes of the past wars, but our duty is not to forget and take care of the heroes who are at the frontline and defend our country from the Russian aggression.”
A great grief was brought by war to the family of the deputy from UKROP faction in Lutsk City Council Petro Boyko. His two grandfathers and an uncle were killed in battles during war.
“Victory Day is certainly a commemorative date, because the war has left a bloody imprint on almost every Ukrainian family. I did not know my grandparents, but I made certain images basing on the stories. I believe, while the memory of the heroes is living in the hearts of families, their heroic deeds will not be forgotten,” said Petro Boyko.
Many people have come to the memorial with their children. Chairman of the UKROP faction Vyacheslav Rublev has also came with his little son. The MP recalls how since his childhood he has been coming here on May 9, commemorating the heroes who were killed during the Second World War.
“It is important to tell children about such key historical events. As without knowing the past, we are not worthy the future. This is especially important today, when Ukraine is again in a state of war, says Vyacheslav Rublev. – My grandfathers were also fighting: one was in the Red Army, the other one, who lived on the territory of Holmshchyna, – in self-defense formations. Unfortunately, the war took the lives of both of them, so I know my grandfathers know only from stories. And I tell them to my son, so that he also knew about the heroism of his ancestors.”

In Cherkassy on May 9 the chairman of UKROP faction in the City Council Ruslan Zorya together with the chairman of public self-organization committee of Lisovy district Nadiya Medvedenko have organized an event “Neighbor’s Table”.
“Such events help to keep the chain of national memory. It is nice to see the happy eyes of Tetyana Sinyakova and Mykhaylo Kovalev – people who have borne the burden of a terrible war. And of course it is pleasant to see that today they are side by side with their friends, neighbors and children. I believe that the residents should organize such events more often. Neighbor’s tables may be arranged for any reason. They help people to make acquaintance, to gather and unite for communicating or making plans for the further development of the city. People need the initiator of such events. They do not need to be fed, but to be organized. Then they will be in a mood to have a rest together, and to solve common problems. I believe that this is the task of the committees on public self-organization and deputies. As in this difficult time for the country we need unity and unanimity of opinion,” summed up the UKROP representative.
The residents of Lisovy district actively participate in such events and have initiated some new municipal holidays.
“For the fifth consecutive year we join the municipal action, dedicated to the Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation, said chairman of public self-organization committee of Lisovy district Nadiya Medvedenko. – This year the event in Berezovy Hai was attended by more than 40 people, among them there were two veterans. Together we were cooking field porridge, people brought various dishes from home. And we were singing songs and dancing, accompanied by the accordion.”
