On July 30, the Memorandum of interaction for the development of physical culture and sports was signed between Dnipropetrovsk City Council, Ukraine’s Athletics Federation and the Athletics Federation of Dnipro city. One of its issues is the construction of stadiums.
“I adopted a decision – an athletics stadium will be built in ‘Chervony Kamin’ residential area in compliance with international standards. In particular, it is planned to hold national and European competitions at the stadium with the support of the colleagues of the Ministry of Sports. The stadium at the quay of in ‘Chervony Kamin’ residential area will be a sort of anchor equipped with the surrounding green zone for leisure of citizens,” Borys Filatov, mayor of Dnirop states.
The new athletics stadium should be completed next year, its design provides for athletic tracks, sector for throws, football field with natural covering, playgrounds for tennis, volleyball, basketball and other sports. In addition, it was decided to renovate the stadium of Dnipropetrovsk Car Repair Plant.
First Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports of Ukraine Igor Hotsul stressed that cooperation between Dnipro and the government became possible due to the position of the city government: “As soon as Mayor of Dnipro Borys Filatov announced the program ‘Dnipro as sports capital’, the Ministry, the Federation and National Olympic Committee took this as guide to action. Dnipro has great sporting achievements, but needs to get its sports infrastructure upgraded. The new stadium in ‘Chervony Kamin’ will allow holding worldwide level competitions. In addition, we are elaborating the strategy for development of sports in Dnipro for the next 10 years.”
The memorandum also spells out the procedure for the introduction of athletics in the school curriculum. “They should be the easy, dynamic and, what is also important, interesting sports classes for children. They should heighten pupils’ interest in sports and encourage the active lifestyle. In turn, these classes will enable us to identify candidates for professional sports among children and give them a start in life,” President of the Athletics Federation of the Dnipro River Marina Filatova claims.
