The Mayor of Dnipro Borys Filatov is convinced that there will be no problems with the documents or the city budget due to its renaming. He said it during the press conference on May 19.
The head of the city urged everybody and asked to be very careful in the assessments and statements in order not to provoke a split in society. However, he emphasized that there is the decision of the Parliament on renaming the city, and it should be implemented.
“Me as a mayor, as well as the executive committee must carry out decisions of the highest legislative body of the state. And we will implement it. Any speculations about the fact that renaming needs additional costs of our countrymen or that people will have to pay some money – this is only a part of political PR,” said Borys Filatov and added that the sum of money needed for renaming was preliminary estimated at 700-800 thousand hryvnias.
The mayor said that most residents of the city on the Dnipro did not associate the former name with the persecutor of the Ukrainian people Hryhoriy Petrovskiy. He also considers this renaming controversial and irrelevant, and has repeatedly informed the senior officials of the Verkhovna Rada about this.
Borys Filatov also said that there were about 300 streets in the city which were renamed within decommunization.
As it is known, on May 19, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted a resolution that renames Dnipropetrovsk as Dnipro. It was supported by 247 MPs.
