Renaming Dnipropetrovsk city as Dnipro, the Verkhovna Rada actually gives an official status to the people’s name that is widely used by most residents of the city and the whole Ukraine. The initiator of such renaming – MP and member of UKROP political council Andriy Denysenko – told it to the journalists in the Parliament on May 19.
“The whole city and the majority of Ukrainians have been calling it Dnipro for a long time. Today the Parliament has reached out to the will of the majority of the residents of our glorious city,” said Andriy Denysenko. The politician believes that the city has honor to be called after the most powerful waterway that has actually given birth to the whole country.
According to the MP, it’s high time that the name of Hryhoriy Petrovskiy should be removed from the name of the city and thrown into the dustbin of history, as a few years ago this Soviet leader was recognized by the Court of Appeal of Kyiv as one of the organizers of Holodomor in 1930s – genocide against the Ukrainian people. Andriy Denysenko has also added that at the next step of decommunization Dnipropetrovsk region should be renamed as Sicheslavsk, as mostly of Cossack Sich was situated on the territories around the Dnipro, Marganets and Nikopol.
