Soon the Ukrainian authorities will have to answer uncomfortable questions asked by Europe concerning selective justice and political repression, expressively evidenced by the case of one of the leaders of UKROP Hennady Korban. The MP and the member of the presidium of UKROP political council Vitaliy Kupriy has written it on his Facebook page.
The MP has informed that on Tuesday, January 26, in Strasbourg he had a meeting with the Director of Human Rights, Special Representative of Council of Europe Secretary General in Ukraine Christos Giakoumopoulos and the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Nils Muižnieks. “During the meeting I handed over a statement on gross violations of human rights in politically motivated prosecutions of Hennady Korban, his lawyers Oksana Tomchuk, Andriy Bogdan and Igor Cherezov and the number of the activists of UKROP party,” stressed the politician.
According to Vitaliy Kupriy, this information was unexpected for the Europeans. The high officials of the leading European institutions were surprised by the fact that instead of declared reforms of courts and law enforcement agencies, in Ukraine there is a practice of many-hours-long marathon trials of suspects who need urgent medical care. Non-admission of lawyers, depriving the suspect of medicines, food, water and sleep, arrests without any court decision, manipulation with territorial jurisdiction and automated cases distribution system, decision on closed court session, attack at the courtroom by the law enforcers accompanied by smashing furniture and computer equipment, absence of competitiveness in proceedings that have taken place within Korban’s case – are shocking even for the experienced human rights defenders, said the MP. “Soon the authorities will be asked some uncomfortable questions by Europe, and they will have to answer,” he is convinced.
In addition, the MP said that he had filed a complaint to the Committee for the Prevention of Torture concerning the actions of the law enforcers and judges in Korban’s case, pointing to consistent and massive practice of inhuman treatment of detainees, arrested and condemned persons in Ukraine.
And on Wednesday, January 27, at 13.00, in the 5 room (2nd floor) of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg there will be held a joint presentation of the MPs Vitaliy Kupriy and Victor Vovk on “Unreformed Prosecutor General’s Office and Political Repressions in Ukraine”. “During this event I will also draw attention to Korban’s case. However, we are going to cover the problem wider as the prosecutorial and judicial lawlessness has resulted in detentions in jail and remands prisons of hundreds of other patriots, who also need a helping hand,” stressed the politician
